    Situation

Every summer we run four weeks of playschemes for children of all abilities aged 5 to 12. About 300 children attend the summer schemes and 30 of them have special needs or disabilities. Of these 30, at least 10 need a one-to-one enabler to support them every mnute of the day. With this support, they join in art and craft, sports and games, dance, music and drama, themed event days and full-day outings. They integrate with their mainstream peers, they play and share, they gain social and life skills, confidence and self esteem. And they have LOTS of fun. But none of this would be possible without one to one support, friendship, encouragement and motivation. A one to one enabler for four weeks costs us £6.57 an hour for 7 hours for 20 days = £919.80. 5 enablers cost £4599. Plus on-costs £205. Plus external training (First Aid, Lifting and Handling, Child Protection) £60. Plus in-house training (policies, procedures, equal play, disability awareness, inclusion, health and safety etc) £131. All in all, £4995 for 5 enablers for 4 weeks. Or, putting it another way, 4 weeks of inclusion for 5 disabled children. Or, yet another way, a £5k donation!
