    Situation

We worked for several years with children and young people with disabilities on the summer holiday schemes and we got to know them pretty well. At the end of the summer, the older young people would always ask us for something to do at weekends. And we thought, why not? And we found that all they wanted to do was "what everyone else does" . It didn't seem much to ask, so .. meet the Saturday Stars. The Saturday Stars are aged from 11 to 18. There is currently a group of 12 young people who choose a regular programme of outings and activities. They still like to do "the things everyone else does", like cinema, swimming, DVDs and pizza, just going for a coffee etc but they also have bigger ideas - bowling, skiing, tobogganing, off roading, paintballing, to name but a few! The outings help to improve their social and life skills, increase their confidence and offer them lots of fun! One to one enablers ensure that everyone can participate fully and we have a Variety Club Sunshine Coach with volunteer drivers to take us out Then the younger children said "what about us?" The Saturday Starlets are aged 5 to 11 and they have a similar programme but with less ambitious destinations! The Starlets like nature centres, farm parks, soft play, art and craft sessions and games on the beach, they enjoy playing and socialising together with the help of one to one enablers This project not only gives respite to families but gives the children and young people independence and a chance to "do their own thing" without their families but in complete safety £20,000 a year is needed to fund this project, itworkers, volunteer expenses, diesel and vehicle maintenance and subsidies for outings
