VITAL has helped create an elementary school in the poor rural area of Anirban, India where many children have been deprived of an education. Clean water and sanitation facilities at the school are necessary to encourage the girls and boys to spend all day miles away from their family home.

    Situation

VITAL is trying to break the cycle of poverty in the poor rural subsistence farming community of Anirban, India. The people are mostly farmers who manage their life daily on a "hand-to-mouth" basis. The parents & elders are often illiterate and lack any education, creating an illiteracy cycle. Girls are often more vulnerable of being deprived of an education because they cannot spend all day far from home without any toilet facilities or transport.

    Solution

The project involves a free elementary education center in the rural area as well as recreation, counseling, health awareness & mother support services. Many children will be enrolled into formal schools after completion of the 'bridging' program. Wells and gender-specific bathrooms will be built so more children, especially girls, will be able to attend the school. Bicycles will also be provided to those children living the greatest distances away from the school.
