Woman's Trust

Workshops for women experiencing Domestic Violence

Self development workshops are an important healing element for our clients affected by DV. Women can live in very isolated relationships where their contact with friends, family and colleagues is steadily eroded. It is vital therefore women meet together.

Situation

Women present with PTSD, depression, agoraphobia, suicidal ideation, self-harm, stress and anxiety sometimes long after their experience of DV. Casework suggests that without addressing the psychological impact, women struggle to progress, with it affecting confidence, causing anxiety/depression up to 10 years on. In research by WT and London Metropolitan University (2008), women affected by DV cited mental health services as crucial to recovery.

Solution

Person Centred/Humanistic approach has proven effective for our clients. Sessions provide opportunities for a woman to talk about any issue: her experience of DV, her difficulties, fears for herself/her children, relationship with children, future hopes/aspirations. It also allows inquiry into how DV is impacting on her children. Therefore she is able to explore and overcome obstacles that stand in her way to recovery and her ability to create a fuller life for her/her children.
