Sport and play activities give thousands of young people and child refugees in Liberia the know-how to protect themselves against AIDS and other health threats. Children learn conflict resolution and cooperative skills through playing together, helping to reunite communities devastated by the civil war, and young people gain self-esteem, happiness and new hope for the future.

    Situation

Restoring Our Children's Hope is a volunteer-led community organisation in Liberia, set up to bring sport and play activities and education to children in light of the mental, physical, social and emotional benefits that sport has been shown to bring. In Liberia, where the repercussions of the 1999-2003 civil war are still felt in high levels of poverty, division between and within communities, and increased rates of migration promoting the spread of AIDs, these benefits are deeply needed. Leaders largely fund the programmes themselves and engage over 30,000 children across Liberia in regular sport and play activities, as well as special events such as a month-long community football tournament climaxing on International Day of Peace. The end goals of the project include increasing children's health awareness, reducing school drop-out rates, and improving community relations between Liberians in the post-civil war environment. At present, the programme is maintained through the contributions of committed members. However, their own financial resources are limited and much of the equipment with which they work at present requires replacement, costing in the region of £3,000. Funds are required to sustain the broad geographic coverage of ROCH over a continuing period: just £20 provides one child with a year of regular, twice-weekly sport activity, while £6,000 would pay for six months' basic supplies essential to ROCH's continuing operation, such as petrol for transport, office supplies and phone credit for communication.
