We are looking for funds to enable us to run our core service at our Newbury town centre location, which enables us to help over 200 young people between the ages of 11 and 25 each year. With our team of volunteer counsellors, we offer an early intervention service to 46 young people each week.

    Situation

50% of lifetime mental health illnesses emerge before the age of 14, with 75% emerging before 25. 10% of children and young people have a clinically diagnosable mental problem yet 70% of children and adolescents who experience mental health problems have not had appropriate interventions at a sufficiently early age. We aim to help these young people early, reducing the need for further professional intervention, helping build self-confidence, encourage relationships and increase life choices.

    Solution

What we do is proven to work. We collect Clinical Outcomes in Routine Improvement scores - monitoring changes in levels of client mental health through the counselling process. CORE score is between 0 -40, with 40 being the greatest level of distress. The average CORE score of young people coming to see us for counselling for the first time is 20.4, equating to “moderate severe” psychological distress. Over time of counselling, this reduces to 12.9, to a category of "mild" distress.
