Mbekweni is a township 60km from Cape Town near Paarl. It has a long history of poverty and ill health. There are high levels of unemployment and over 40% live below the South African poverty line. The young people play a lot of ad-hoc sport. However, generally the girls and other vulnerable children are excluded. The project is building an indoor sports centre which will be a secure and controlled environment in which to work with the young people. To bring about life change there will be 6 development programmes which will be based at the centre but work in the township. The aims are  An increase in awareness of HIV/AIDs and its prevention  A growing self belief in individuals and the community  A significant increase in individuals’ health and self esteem  An increase in community pride and participation  An opportunity for different communities and racial groups to work and play together in harmony  A reduction in crime, unacceptable behaviours and substance abuse The target groups are – • Children and young people living with the effects of health issues o HIV/AIDs, TB, Epilepsy • Vulnerable children and young people o Girls, disabled, orphans, street children • Children and young people o Disadvantaged, affected by poverty It is expected the direct impact will be to over 6,000 young people/year The building of the centre is underway and will be complete by 12th June 2010. The funding for this is 70% in place. The creation, organisation and running of the development programmes is budgeted at approximately £60,000 per year.
