    Situation

The Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama plays a key role in the cultural life of Cardiff, Wales and the UK. It provides specialist training in Acting, Theatre and Costume Design, Music and Stage Management and trains around 600 exceptional students a year selected by audition from the UK and abroad. It has achieved marked success in all these disciplines in recent years. RWCMD is currently building a raft of much-needed facilities which will fulfill a long held ambition to match first-class teaching with excellent performance, rehearsal and exhibition spaces. Aside from a new Concert Hall and Theatre, the project includes an Exhibition Gallery where the College will be able to showcase it’s award winning-textile and costume work. The key elements of the project comprise: (a) a 450 capacity world-class Concert Hall for rehearsals, public recitals and master-classes (b) an Exhibition Arcade to display our award-winning costume designs (c) a 160 seat state-of-the-art Theatre with a dress circle and teaching gallery (d) four new full-sized, double height Acting and Movement Studios with the same ‘footprint’ as the Theatre (e) a new ‘Front Door’ to the College opening onto a central Foyer with informal performance spaces and a new Café/bar and Terrace overlooking historic Bute Park (f) a new dye and printing room within the College’s existing facilities (g) a renovated and upgraded Bute Theatre (capacity 150-200) doubling as a television studio This project is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to enable the College to provide fit-for-purpose facilities for its students and the wider community. It will provide first-class facilities for the College as well as increasing opportunities for local performing arts organisations and designers to promote and display their work. The new facilities will also ensure that the College can enhance its positioning and profile in the UK and internationally in order to continue to attract the best young artists from around the world to train and work in Cardiff.
