    Situation

There are approximately 120,000 adults in England and Wales who have severe and complex physical and learning disabilities. Research has found that attempts to improve the quality of life for people with such disabilities have mainly failed. Most funding is still locked into day centre based activities with little available to support leisure time activities at evenings and weekends. Additionally, opportunities are so limited because there are few venues that can cater for adults with profound physical as well as learning disabilities. Soundabout is well placed to fill this gap for adults within a thirty mile catchment area (including the counties of Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire and Berkshire and Northamptonshire). We have built up a database of all relevant services and establishments caring for adults with profound disabilities in the area and developed links with a number of these organisations. Soundabout offers a programme of music sessions and festivals specially designed for adults with profound disabilities at a venue with full disabled access and facilities to meet their individual needs. Soundabout trainers are skilled at supporting and enabling staff with little training or outside stimulation and we ensure that they too enjoy the experience and can learn new skills and music making techniques. We help these staff to identify the needs and potential of their individual residents and give advice on activities they might be able to continue at home. Where the staff would like further input and support, Soundabout trainers can then go into residential care homes to run further activities and training. From 2009, we plan to run thirty adult sessions at Thomley Barn each year. The cost of each session for ten adults is £550, based on two trainers plus back up staff and equipment and facilities costs. Adults with profound disabilities have limited funding available for recreational activities so Soundabout is only able to charge a maximum of £5 per session. Soundabout therefore needs to raise £15,000 to provide thirty interactive music making sessions for adults in Thomley Barn during 2009.
