We are looking for between £10 -12,000 to finance a week for 25-30 young people in recovery from cancer or leukaemia to return and further their sailing skills at our multi-activity residential dinghy week. This week gives the young people the chance to build confidence and friendships whilst trying new things with others who understand what they have been through.

    Situation

The Ellen MacArthur Trust identified a need to continue to support and build relationships with its young people after their initial trip. This week allows the young people to learn sailing in smaller, more responsive boats as well as try new activities such as high ropes, archery and canoeing. This consistency, and giving the young people something different to look forward to can be invaluable. Claire, 15, treated Southampton General Hospital, returned to sail at Bradwell this year and sums up the importance of coming back better than we could. "Ever since my illness, I just felt that no one could understand what was going on in my head. (On the trips) I can't possibly describe just how much it means to me to be able to get things off my chest, with people who reply 'Yep, I feel like that all the time', and really mean it." Building these relationships means once 18, with this sailing knowledge and enthusiasm behind them, the young people can return as volunteers, providing a very positive role model for those experiencing the Trust for the first time. "Tyler gained lots of confidence and lots of new friends who he is still in touch with. I am really glad he went. To meet children who have been through the same thing is invaluable. Tyler also met a volunteer in his twenties who had the same cancer as him, which gave Tyler alot of hope for the future." Mother of Tyler, 15 who came on a trip for the first time in 2008 after being treated at Birmingham Children's Hospital. In 2008 seven of our volunteers had previously sailed as young people having recovered from cancer or leukaemia, and it is purely the fact that we invite them back year after year that has allowed this to happen. It costs an average of £400 per young person for the residential dinghy week at Bradwell including all activities, accommodation, safety equipment, travel and food.
