Open defacation is a leading cause of water contamination and the spead of deadly disease. Women and children are at risk of attack from criminals and rapists, as well as the risk from snakes and scorpions. Many girls miss a week of their education every month because their school does not have a toilet and therefore no opportunity to change sanitary protection during menstruation. This is hardly empowering. Eco-san toilets provide the safe and clean conditions that young girls and all the community require to take care of their sanitary requirements, they prevent the spread of deadly diseases and the contamination of the natural water source. They are non flushing, composting toilets that transform human waste into a valuable commodity; compost, which is either sold or used to fertilize the communities own crops.
