We are aiming to set up spoken english groups for Man & Women in the community who speak little or no English, covering topics relavent to everyday life eg registering with the GP, accessing council services , their childrens education, opening a bank account, shopping. The aim is to give them sufficient English to enable them to function on a daily basis and recieve and give information and to be understood in English to reduce isolation and mental wellbeing.

    Situation

We are running this project as there is a very high demand for ESOL classes in the local area and due to the high fees are inaccessable to many in tyhe community who need to learn very basic , every day english in order to have use of services many take for granted eg health, housing, education and financial services. We require upto £10,000 to cover hall hire, equipment for activities and language development and staffing and volunteers costs. We will be limiting class size to 16 people per group so would expect to have a minimum of 32 poeple using the classes per year, although this would increase as people moved into employment or more formal english classes.
