    Situation

Children and young people who are struggling with emotional difficulties often become disruptive and find it difficult to concentrate at school, and their academic achievement may be badly affected. Those who receive support, care and advice are enabled to resolve, overcome or find a way through their problems and difficulties. Many are able to continue in their studies and achieve well at school, relationships with peers and families improve and social isolation is reduced. This helps prevent antisocial behaviour and criminal activity and is of general benefit to the community as a whole. Counselling and mediation are offered free at the point of need, and because we do not limit the number of sessions we are able to build up relationships of trust with young people in order to work through issues with them. We have developed a network of qualified counsellors who live in different areas of Gloucestershire, alongside a network of meeting places. This enables us to deliver counselling close to the young person’s home or school, thus giving them independent access to our service. Clients are referred to Teens in Crisis via Connexions, schools, social services, health service providers and other professional organisations, and many young people and their families contact us directly. The continued confidence in our service, feedback received through comment sheets provided to our clients and regular supervision of counsellors’ casework all suggest that we are having a positive effect. Teens in Crisis is currently funded by Local Authority grants (including Gloucestershire County Council, Forest of Dean and Tewkesbury Flood Relief), Service Level Agreements with schools, various independent trusts (including Children in Need, Peter Lang Trust, Lloyds TSB, Zurich Community Trust and Henry Smith Charity), donations and fundraising. The full cost of one counselling session within our Free Access Counselling Service is £35.00. This includes salary expenses, cost of counselling rooms, travel, training, supervision and overheads.
