At SOS Children, we are carrying out new projects in Chipata, the main town in Zambia‚Äôs Eastern Province. Here the adult literacy rate is only 48% compared to the national average of 68% . Education is vital for breaking the vicious circle of poverty ‚Äì it goes hand in hand with development. Children who have been to school are more likely to grow into self-sufficient and healthy adults.
SOS Children‚Äôs project activities: ‚Ä¢ Construct a nursery school as part of the new Children‚Äôs Village now being built in Chipata ‚Ä¢ Add a 6-classroom extension, and a toilet block, to the existing Damview Community Primary School (built by local parents) ‚Ä¢ Consult with school staff to identify teacher training needs ‚Ä¢ Supply teaching materials ‚Ä¢ Provide Nursery and Primary School scholarships for children from vulnerable families in the community ‚Ä¢ Initiate an adult literacy programm
