Our intention is to design and construct a state-of-the-art broad-beam steel boat capable of providing affordable luxury overnight accommodation for up to twelve people to be operated on a self-steer basis by disabled or disadvantaged families or community groups on the inland waterways of East London, Essex and Hertfordshire.

    Situation

The creation of a luxury boat, designed not simply for wheelchair access, but for operation by people with all types of disability, as a crew member rather than simply a passenger, is an imaginative and innovative project that could be replicated throughout the country. The construction of the boat will provide a formal vocational learning programme for young people to enable them to acquire the skills to enter the boatbuilding and repair industry, one of the fastest growing industries in the UK during the last 20 years. The ongoing operation of the boat will be supported by a major local volunteering programme.
