    Situation

In our experience a high proportion (25%) of adults in this region of Northern Tanzania is HIV positive. Women in particular have suffered and when we started supporting women with HIV, our local partners explained that a basic need was to provide them with a livelihood . However, the lack of even the smallest amount of capital made this impossible. Food insecurity in those with HIV results in susceptibility to infections. Children often drop out of school to contribute to family income.

    Solution

We conceived the idea of providing business grants which overseen by local mentors, enabled the women to set up small businesses. The income generated enables the women to feed, house and educate themselves and their family. Success in providing livelihood support to HIV sufferers depends upon effective follow up of grants which is done by Community Counsellors, local people who work with HIV sufferers as their main job, or have run successful businesses.
