Situation

The Warwickshire Observatory identified that: Obesity levels double between Reception and Year 6; Risk factors associated with childhood obesity and lack of exercise include ethnicity, deprivation and urban environments – this is relevant to The Gap between 50-75% of the young people that come to Youth Club live in deprived or disadvantaged situations. Following an internal consultation, it was identified that over 75% of Youth Club users ate poorly and led a sedentary lifestyle.

Solution

This 10-week project will aim to tackle the problem of obesity, poor diet and lack of exercise amongst 150+ young people aged between 7-16 years old. The project will also indirectly benefit at least 300+ family, friends and other Gap service users as the young people will be given the opportunity to disseminate their learnings through the medium of drama and arts/crafts projects. Project participants will take part in cooking classes, exercise taster sessions and educational workshops.
