WEA Culture of Arts is a programme that aims to create a series of interrelated arts activities to explore the cultural diversity of Liverpool’s communities. Its objectives are to celebrate the diversity of people’s lives and encourage involvement in the arts at whatever level is appropriate to the participant or group. It will focus primarily on those groups with no or limited engagement in community art based projects. The target groups will be identified through existing WEA networks across the City and in consultation with voluntary sector organisations. Groups the project will work with include: -People over 50, particularly those who live alone. -Domestic Violence Groups. -Homeless People. -Family learning particularly father and children groups. -Disability groups including mental health, learning and physical disabilities including sensory impairment. -Refugees or Asylum Seekers. -Members of ethnic minority communities. -Women Prisoners

    Situation

A range of different art based media will be used to engage, stimulate and present cultural diversity within the target groups, encouraging people to participate and express their experiences of work and every day life. The art based media will vary from group to group but can include performing arts, creative writing, poetry, music and textiles. A coordinated event and/or exhibitions of completed work will be organised in conjunction with participants. This will vary depending upon the choice of media chosen but could include, an exhibition, a drama or theatre production or a music or fashion show. It is anticipated that these events will be delivered at the end of the project. The groups will be facilitated by tutors and/or artists as in practical workshops in local community venues across the City. It is anticipated that participants and groups will benefit as follows: -An opportunity to engage in an arts based project -Participation in structured learning environment/workshops. -Development of personal and team communication skills. -Learning in an enjoyable way using an artistic and creative process -Learning practical skills through visual art, creative writing, music, performing arts or textiles. -Continuing self development, building confidence, increasing self esteem and enhancing personal and group interpersonal skills. -Engagement in their local community and developing wider networks with other groups or individuals. A report will be produced at the end of the project that aims to capture the project activities, evaluate and review practice and process. It is hoped that this report could be used to feedback to partners, participants and other interested organisations and networks. The projects sustainability strategy will explore how groups and individuals can be empowered to develop and build their capacity. This may be through training, information sharing, networking and developing links with other key activities within the City such as the Capital of Culture, educational programmes, and the Voluntary Organisation Learning Association. The project will be managed by the Workers Educational Association North West Region (WEA NW Region) which has excellent project management experience, good financial and accounting practices and MIS systems. In the academic year 2006/07 the WEA NW Region delivered over 1600 courses with over 18000 enrolments and in 2005, along with other grant based projects, successfully delivered a large community art based project as part of the Five Arts Cities programme.
