Shooting Star Children's Hospices

Music Therapy for One Year

Music is used as therapy because it helps children understand and express their feelings in a way they may not be able to do otherwise. A wide range of children can benefit - those who have been bereaved, children who are living with a disabled sibling or children who may be ill themselves.

Situation

Children we support can find it difficult to communicate their feelings with words. Words can be hard to find, or inadequate in describing how they feel and many children with life-limited conditions are unable to speak or communicate verbally.

Solution

Music therapy is a confidential space for children to explore, identify and articulate their feelings. It's an opportunity for children to be really honest about what is going on, without necessarily having to spell it out. The benefits of music therapy: - Improves emotional well-being - Shows a child a way to express their feelings - Develops confidence and self-esteem - Provides the opportunity to be in control, be heard and listened to - Helps manage pain and discomfort
