    Situation

The purpose is to reinforce the place of Jewish music as a world rated academic discipline and inform all music students (at particular Universities in the first instance SOAS) who will become the future teachers, composers, performers, administrators, writers etc - about Jewish music. University based Education and training: Achieving the partnership which we have with the Department of Music at SOAS University of London for University Education in Jewish music is of paramount significance to the stature and effectiveness of the Jewish Music Institute. This provides the backbone for all other JMI activities and is something no other Jewish cultural organisation could duplicate. i. Teaching Lectureship. As a university based institute we have the advantage of academic credibility. Our support of and relationship with possibly the world's only full time lectureship in Jewish music at a mainstream university (SOAS) is highly regarded both by the university and by the public. The lectureship is part of the Department of Music. All first year music students get a taste of Jewish music and second and third year students can major in various aspects. Postgraduate students can register for MA and PhD degrees. International Conferences bring scholars from around the world to London for study in Jewish music. At present JMI pays for half the cost (approximately £22,000 pa) and SOAS for the other half. The loss Family has supported the lectureship since its inception and Mildred pledged £10K a year for three years before she died. We have two years funds in hand. It is our aim that SOAS take over more of or all the costs after two years. Funded studentships. A vital addition that we should make this year to reinforce the position of the full time lectureship is to provide financial support to post-graduate students studying Jewish music with the Joe Loss Lecturer in Jewish Music at SOAS. This strengthens our position at the University as post graduate students increase the university’s income. Jennifer Jankel has established 'Mildred Loss Studentship's to support post-graduates. This autumn already two PhD students commence their courses helped by these Studentships – one in Greek Jewish music and the other in Ethiopian Jewish music. We have used some funds from a legacy left to JMI by Mildred Loss. Jennifer has raised a further sum and it is hoped that funds for the 'Mildred Loss Studentships' will be raised annually and that other people may want to donate studentships. ii. Research and Conferences Through academic teaching and research as well as international conferences, sponsored, organised and managed by JMI, (at least 4 coming up this year), the British research base in Jewish music is growing. There is an increase in the number of publications on the subject as well as the number of people trained and skilled to use Jewish music in their future teaching, composition, performing etc careers. Our research and conference remit is in aspects of music of the Jewish people and also in other aspects of our work eg Music suppressed by the Third Reich and Western Classical music. iii. JMI evening classes, workshops and summer schools Alongside the lectureship which is the part of the Department of Music – JMI in partnership with the Department of Music, presents weeklong vacation courses, day workshops and weekly evening classes in klezmer music, Yiddish language, dance and song as well as cantorial music. These are for SOAS students and also for the general public. Apart from the direct educational benefit to the students, these classes and courses provide an inspirational environment and a networking opportunity for students to establish and reinforce contacts which help in their further development. iiii. Other aspects of tertiary Education We are now developing an educational relationship with the University of Liverpool and this is national expansion is important to our future.
