    Situation

On Saturday 3rd November Merton & Sutton Crossroads will be opening their new children’s club based at the Cricket Green School in Mitcham. The club is for young people aged 10 – 16 who have learning disabilities. The club will be run every Saturday and is an extension of the successful Summer Club held at the School by Crossroads. The London Borough of Merton has provided funding for the club until the end of March 2008 and Crossroads are busy fundraising to secure its long-term future. Young people at the club take part in a range of activities from ball games to bowling. The club is being named in memory of Alice Powell who was the inspiration for the club but sadly due to her unexpected death on the 12th May this year never got to attend the club herself. Opening the club will be the Mayor of Merton Cllr John Dehaney in the presence of Alice’s parents and close friends and family. Karen Caiger Children’s Service Co-ordinator for Merton & Sutton Crossrads stated that: “Alice was one of the first children to attend our other club at the Polka Theatre in Wimbledon starting there when she was 8 years old. The upper age limit for the club at the Polka Theatre is 13 and when Alice came to leave we realised that there was no other club in the borough for her or other children with similar needs to attend as because of their disabilities a high level of staff support is required to ensure the young people get the opportunity to participate in all the activities. We really miss Alice and hope that this club in a small way will help to keep her memory alive and that the club will go on to help other children to enjoy their Saturday as much as Alice enjoyed her time at the Polka Theatre Club” If anyone would like to receive more information about the club they should contact Karen Caiger at Crossroads on: 020 8648 9677 or email: karen@mertonandsuttoncrossroads.org
