There is a growing problem with School Refusers in the South Wiltshire area. By running bespoke courses for these 11-15 year olds tailored to their specific needs and age range it is possible to re-integrate them back into mainstream education.

    Situation

Individual school refusers are identified by the LEA Education Welfare Officers. Courses (currently 3 per year) are run for a maximum of ten individuals, each course lasting approximately 6 weeks. Initial work focuses on Anger Management and Social Inclusion development before academic subjects are introduced in preparation for returning to the classroom. At the end of the course staff assist successful individuals back into a particular school and act as a mentor until integration is achieved. Each course uses two paid specialist staff, assisted by volunteers. Each course is costed at £4000. Due to the success of these courses (currently running at 50%) we receive partial funding from the LEA, however, this is insufficient to enable sufficient courses to be run to meet demand. Our current total budget from all donations (including chraitable trusts, individual donations, local churches and LEA) is £12,000, allowing us to run three courses each year. With additional funding we would be able to run additional courses. The number of school refursers is on the increase. Of particular note is that the age of the individuals is decreasing. More emphasis is required to focus on the younger part of the age range, as they are more likely to benefit in the long term if they can be caught early enough. New funding needs to be identified to expand our work at this grouping.
