    Situation

The Wordsworth Trust has grown appreciably as an organisation over the past thirty years, expanding our Collection of manuscripts, books and paintings, our range of activities and, consequently, our reputation. In 2004 the Spectator described us as “the finest literary museum in the world.” Our Collection is of international significance and needs a new and appropriately iconic, state-of-the-art museum and gallery in which it can properly be exhibited to a wider audience. This will replace the cramped and outdated building that currently houses the Wordsworth Museum and which does not facilitate the display of the Collection in conditions that demonstrate its world-class status. The creation of an iconic new building on our site at Town End, in the heart of the Lake District National Park will reflect the Collection’s internationally pre-eminent status and Cumbria’s position as the cradle of British Romanticism, and will be named the National Museum of Romanticism.
