Emmaus Colchester is a small charity with big plans to give homeless people a bed and a reason to get out of it. We plan to open a wood recycling business in 2008 staffed by formerly homeless people living in our Emmaus Community in the town.

    Situation

Emmaus residents, called Companions, will collect unwanted wood, primarily from construction and demolition sites, and recycle it for re-use by DIY customers, garden centre sales, MDF manufacturers etc. Companions will also make furniture from offcuts and chip the fuel for the biomass boiler running the heating and hot water in the Community. They will earn a living, help run the building where they live and cut down on waste, all at the same time. We need a one-off amount of £75,000 to start the project off. After a year's operation, we anticipate it will be self-sufficient and not require further funding. We won't come back for more!
