MAP was established by Local Solutions in 1986 as a supported lodgings scheme to provide ‘family style’ accommodation and support for young homeless people aged 16 to 18. Young people are referred to the project through social services and other youth support agencies.

    Situation

MAP is an effective solution to a complex problem. Its pioneering work looked at youth homelessness from a whole new angle that has been recognised nationally for its innovation and approach. MAP works with a team of registered volunteer householders who are willing to offer the young people a room within their own homes. The lodgings are within the homes of families/couples/individuals throughout the area. This gives the young people an opportunity to benefit from the supported atmosphere of a family home, whilst being encouraged to develop the skills required for independent living. Last year, MAP expanded outside of Merseyside with a new office openining in Denbigh in North Wales. Now covering Denbighshire and Flintshire it is hoped that the project can fulfil a need in more areas over time. MAP is funded through Supporting People and supplemented by Housing Benefit. Funding is also sought from charitable trusts and benefactors in order to support additional activities - i.e. holidays, adventure breaks and to provide emergency payments to our young people in need through the Hardship Fund.
