The girls' house at the orphanage has no water supply or sewage disposal so the girls have to use the washrooms in the adjoining house. The garden is waterlogged so drainage is needed. The whole building needs decoration, floor tiling and renewal of window mosquito netting. Estimated cost £5,000.

    Situation

To improve living conditions, security and privacy for the female orphans who currently share the limited toilet and washing facilities in the boys' house next door. Drainage of the waterlogged land will enable the septic tank to be brought into use and sanitation established. Refurbishment of the bedrooms, including tiled floors and provision of storage units will reduce dust and clutter. The risk of malaria will be reduced by replacing the mosquito netting at the windows.

    Solution

The land will be drained and the septic tank and a water supply to the house will be connected. The rooms will be clean, well furnished, secure and protected from invasion by mosquitoes.
