We want to improve accessibility to Lewes Castle, a medieval Castle right in the middle of Lewes, Sussex, UK.

Situation
We will improve physical access to Lewes Castle by: • Upgrading the steps, paths and railings in the Castle to meet modern standards and taking into account the need to select a surface or surfaces which are suitable for all visitors. It will be possible to make the Gun Garden, at the base of the Keep, accessible to wheelchair users. • Install a covered pavilion and seating area in the Gun Garden for people who are unable or disinclined to climb up the Keep. • Improve seating at various points along the steps and path up to the Keep to provide rest areas We will improve intellectual access to Lewes Castle by: • Installing introduction boards, a plan and model of the Castle in the Gun Garden so that visitors know what they can expect to see during their visit. • Providing information boards with maps at important points around the open areas of the Castle • Installing new displays in the South Tower and the upper room of the Barbican Tower informing visitors about the history and construction of Lewes Castle and about the function of English castles in general. • Installing interactive elements within the displays
