    Situation

Pregnancy can become a nightmare for the expectant mother. Abusers get worse at this time as they start to feel a loss of control of the relationship as the pregnancy progresses. This leads to increasing levels of violence which can endanger the mother and baby. In some cases the onset of violence will be the first time that a woman realises that her partner is an abuser. The terror is indescribable. This project will seek to educate the mothers who are vulnerable to this violence or who are already experiencing it and provide them with support to plan for a safe and healthy future. It will also educate, advise and guide those in the health sector who often know these problems exist but do not know where to go for answers or help. The emphasis will be on safety, empowerment and long term health for the mother and child. Standing Together has worked successfully in Hammersmith and Fulham for 10 years and will work with the community and health sector in that Borough to identify the victims and their potential carers. They will all then receive advice and expert support allowing us to achieve the outcome described above, i.e. safety and health. We are a charity that has a significant track record in the domestic violence field and excellent relationships with local health professionals. The only thing stopping us now is the lack of resources to deliver this simple but crucially important piece of work.
