    Situation

The new contemporary galleries in the General Staff Building will be the first dedicated space for contemporary art in the State Hermitage Museum - Russia's greatest museum. A new project 'Hermitage 20/21' was launched in 2007 dedicated to extending the museum's collection of 20th century Western art and creating an exciting centre for contemporary art and events. While the Hermitage has an encyclopedic collection of world art up to the date of the Russian Revolution in 1917, very little has been acquired since then. The new galleries will include a vast hall, on two floors, and single floor surrounding galleries on both levels. Most of the General Staff Building is schedules as a historic monument and the architecture cannot be altered. However, there is one section facing the Moika River, which was destroyed in the war and rebuilt in the 1950s. The new galleries will be a complete rebuild in this section.
