The overall aim of the Peru Green Initiative and Reforestation Programme is to provide (a) alternative livelihoods to impoverished local communities dependent on deforestation and slash and burn farming techniques to survive; and (b) to reforest the Amazonian basin of Peru to absorb carbon emissions resulting from modern lifestyles in the UK and for future generations. The project aims to provide UK-based but globally responsible and environmentally conscious individuals and companies with a means to offset their carbon footprints and at the same time to support a charitable cause.

Situation
The project will contribute towards addressing the extremely high and disproportionately imbalanced impact of environmental degradation and pollution on economically and politically disadvantaged people in Peru. It will address issues of social, economic, and political marginalization of minorities and low-income forest communities, in the Loreto region and in other areas of the Peruvian Amazon basin, and concerns over environmental degradation of the Amazon forest as the second most important carbon sink in the world after the oceans. It will address the extremes of global inequity and burdens of carbon absorption and sequestration borne by impoverished native communities living in dire poverty and danger in the Amazon basin.
