    Situation

The Shekinah Mission was founded in December 1992, and operates principally in the deprived Stonehouse area of the City of Plymouth. The Mission exists to provide help and support to the homeless / rough sleepers, and people otherwise socially disadvantaged or excluded such as those with drug or alcohol addiction, ex-offenders, those with physical or mental health needs, the long-term unemployed, and the elderly and / or disabled. This support is facilitated via a range of projects which provide assistance ranging from basic needs provision (e.g. food, clothing etc.) through to outreach support, night shelter accommodation, education and training, benefits advice, and volunteer work opportunities. Help with finding employment, which includes the ‘Ready for Work’ placement programme with local businesses (run in partnership with Business in the Community), and a social enterprise for clients who successfully complete the training programme, is also available. The projects work with clients to develop their personal self-respect, to improve their confidence, self-esteem and life skills, and to prepare them for independent living and employment, where appropriate.
