The Pan African Conservation Education (PACE) project has been designed to help spread solutions to environmental problems between African communities. Tusk Trust and Siren Conservation Education have produced a set of educational materials about inspiring projects where African people from across the continent are using innovative ways to address their environmental problems. The aim is to educate other communities about the environmental problems facing them and to inspire and encourage them to solve these problems by informing them of solutions that have been devised elsewhere in Africa for the same issues.

    Situation

In Africa the vast majority of children do not get the opportunity to attend tertiary education and a large number do not have the opportunity to attend secondary school. For those that do only a small amount of time is dedicated to the teaching of environmental issues. These younger generations are the future of Africa. Tusk believes that if conservation is to succeed and environmental degradation to be reversed then environmental education needs to be promoted at this early age. The PACE – Pan African Conservation Education – Project has been designed to help address this need by communicating ideas on environmental issues, whether they be practical ideas, advice or solutions, between communities across the continent. The set of education materials have been designed to act as both an environmental education tool and a stimulus to adopt sound and sustainable policies. In addition to distributing the PACE resources throughout Africa, Tusk provides much needed financial support to build and improve facilities at environmental education centres, schools and clubs across the continent. The topics covered are Living with Wildlife, Water, Soils, Forests, Energy, Living by the Ocean and Urban Living. A series of films is accompanied by an illustrated book for children and teachers plus a directory of useful organisations and detailed action sheets on all the techniques covered. To date over 2000 packs have been delivered to 265 education centres in 26 African countries. Tusk is now seeking funding to translate the written education materials and films into French and Swahili and to distribute these new materials across Africa to allow the project to reach a wider audience.
