Chiswick House, designed by the third Earl of Burlington, is one of the finest English Palladian villas. Surrounded by a Grade 1 landscape of international cultural significance, the Gardens are celebrated as a remarkable example of English design inspired by the classical purity of Rome. The Gardens at Chiswick were laid out with help from Burlington’s protégé William Kent, who expressed new ideas in garden design that have led to Britain’s greatest contribution to European art, the landscape garden. Now a public park, this exceptional landscape is under threat and we need to rescue it before it is lost to future generations.

    Situation

In recent decades, lack of resources and limited understanding of the significance of the gardens has placed their future in danger. Thanks to the pledged support of the Heritage Lottery Fund, English Heritage, the London Borough of Hounslow and a number of private donors, just £1.7m is needed to complete the funding for a £12.1m project to regenerate the site by 2010. The park and gardens at Chiswick are in need of much more than a facelift and this project has been designed in close consultation with local people, eminent historians and experts in landscape design. We want to conserve the precious historic features that have inspired scholars for centuries; the project will also create safe habitats for wildlife; and it will renew the decaying and unsightly infrastructure of the public park. The Chiswick House and Gardens Trust is proud to lead the fundraising campaign and we are close to reaching our target. Please get involved and help us ensure the future of the estate and we would be very pleased if you will get in touch so that we can tell you, or better still, show you, our plans.
