In order to meet the demands for out of school child care to support families and to provide opportunities for children to access safe and affordable play opportunities we provide a child care project during term time and school holidays. Providing opportunities for children to play and participate in physical activity is essential in todays inner city environment where such oportunities are limited by fear of crime and lack of access to affordable facilities.

    Situation

The Centre has a purpose built club room and large sports facility, underpinned by a programme of high quality play work promoting participation, responsibility and social inclusion. There is 1,400 square foot of dedicated play areas, including space for quiet play and homework support and over 3,800 square foot of indoor sports hall. Our activities programme provides opportunities for sports and physical activity, an information technology workshop, arts, crafts, social education and personal development. In addition teacher tutored homework support is offered two days a week. All our activities will have as a focus, the aim of increasing confidence, communication skills and reducing anti social behaviour, whilst also providing adequate child care provision to be accessible to working families. An estimated 25% of our membership is from minority ethnic groups. To ensure that opportunities for play and learning are not confined to school terms, we provide 8 weeks a year holiday provision. Children enjoy daily activities throughout the holidays, which encompass a wide range of on-site activities, and off-site trips such as ice skating, adventure playgrounds and swimming. Our activities have proved highly successful in attracting families to other services on offer at the centre, and, as the children grow older, in promoting attendance at the range of youth groups we run for 12 – 21 year olds. The provision enhances and complements our other services for families, including our youth services and our programme of 5 a side football for all age ranges 7 to 16. The provision also eases the transition from primary to secondary school for children and promotes inclusion and continued participation of young people in activities as they reach age 12 and above. Such opportunities are especially important in an inner city area that lacks access to safe play areas and accessible facilities.
