As people live longer it doesn't mean that they live a healthier life. Many people find that their health worsens as they get older and they may suffer from chronic illness, depression and mobility problems. This can often mean that they lose their independence and must rely on formal and informal support services for their every day living. Our Day Centre for Older People project provides a holistic approach to enable older people with medium to high care needs to remain independent, combat isolation and maintain their long term physical and mental health.

    Situation

We aim to be a one stop shop for the range of support services older people require, including: a full range of weekly health and social activities; advice, advocacy, support and preparation of care plans for those with higher care needs; accessible transport to enable housebound older people to attend the centre and access available services; a daily hot meal which encourages healthy eating; day trips and staff supported holidays. The beneficiaries of the project are frail older people. Just over 50% of our current 250 members are between 75 and 84, 23% are 65 - 74, 21% over 84 and 6% between 55 and 64. Approximately 78% of our members are white UK and 22% represent a range of BME communities. There is evidenced need for the project based on the number of users using the centre increasing, the lack of alternative services in the area, the increasing age profile of the local community and the corresponding levels of need. In addition a high level of anxiety in relation to crime and personal safety, increasing house prices leading to a breakdown in family support networks and increased isolation, a re-prioritisation of funding for older people’s activities, statutory sector funding prioritised towards high care needs and the delivery of essential preventative services not currently supported by the local authority or PCT all emphasise the continued need for the project.
