The Pioneering Fund was launched last year as part of our 40th anniversary celebrations, specifically to help us nurture the next generation of dance-makers, create new work and respond to opportunities to show 'what dance can do'.

The Place has been at the forefront of the contemporary dance scene in the UK for the last forty years, however the dance landscape is changing and we need to adapt to meet the changing needs of dance-makers in the 21st century. For example, we have found that there is a lack of substantial commissions for new dance works and of free studio space for artists. We have also found that there is little dance for children in primary education, where dance is not integrated with other subjects.
The Pioneering Fund will provide The Place with the additional financial resources necessary to meet the growing needs of the organisation to invest in new strategic projects, to support up and coming choreographers and respond to continue to take risks and invest in ground-breaking initiatives as and when new opportunities arise.
