Creative Space is a multi-media project designed by young people to promote awareness of, and improve their mental health and emotional well-being, through the use of media technology. Situation

Phase 1 of this project has been funded primarily by the Local Network Fund, Arts Council and Mediabox, which ended on 31st March 2008. It has involved the creation of a new web-site (www.getitoutthere.org.uk) to promote issues around the mental health and emotional well-being of disaffected and vulnerable young people. The young people involved have learnt new skills in media technology, creating podcasts, a documentary film, music recording and art/photography all of which are to be uploaded onto the web-site during Summer 2008. Phase 2 of this project (from April 2008) is to continue to support young people in developing this project further, providing funding to hold Tuesday evening workshops, further music and pod-cast recording, and the potential to extend the website into an online community radio station to be hosted by young people, and further develop their media skills. Undertaking this activity has had a positive effect on the mental health and well-being of the young people involved, recognising that creativity is an important contributor to a sense of well-being. It has engaged a significant number of disadvantaged and disaffected young people, increasing awareness of the importance of young people’s mental health and having a positive impact on the well-being of those young people involved in the project.
