    Situation

CED has recently overseen the successful completion of a pilot project in which groups of women have built 58 ferro-cement tanks in Murambi, Uganda. This new project will train women in the three districts of Kirubura (North Ankole), Masindi and Pallis (Budaka). A total of 18 Women’s Community Based Organisations, three in each of six villages spread throughout the three districts, will be trained to construct the rainwater collection tanks. They will be encouraged to introduce the practice in neighbouring areas, so that the effects of the project will be multiplied. In addition the women will be trained to fabricate pre-cast concrete pit latrine covers. The project also includes a programme of seminars on health, hygiene, HIV/Aids and gender issues. Our local partner is the Planning, Development and Rehabilitation Department of the Church of Uganda. The project is expected to take three years and to cost £485,000.
