Each year RSHP is only able to help a percentage of the people that knock on its door as it simply does not have enough bed spaces. To overcome this RSHP would like to increase the number of people it can house and support in its medium-term accommodation, working with them to enable them to develop the skills they need to move on to longer-term and independent housing.

    Situation

RSHP needs to secure access to more property in which to house people who would otherwise be homeless. RSHP is currently able to house 95 people who would otherwise be homeless. As well as offering affordable housing, RSHP works with each client to support them in addressing the issues affecting their ability to make positive life choices. The challenges faced by the people RSHP exists to help include drug and alcohol misuse, crime, mental health and poor life skills. Each year between 300 and 400 people ask RSHP for help. Some are sleeping rough, in short-term hostels and others are moving from place to place ("sofa surfing"). RSHP recogniseses that providing someone with a roof over their head does not solve all their problems, but it does provide a safe foundation from which they can move on equipped with the skills they need to sustain a long-term tenancy.
