With £50,000 we could know that for the next couple of years we can pay our overheads while we look for new activities to raise funds. With the increase in costs of complying with legislation and the ever-increasing difficulties in maintaining our core of volunteers, we find escalating problems of producing sufficient income to efficiently manage the site and provide funds for contingencies and modest improvements to our services.

    Situation

We are a registered charitable Community Association in existence since 1957. Over the last 44 years we have owned (through our Trustees) and managed a 37-acre site – Wythall Park - dedicated to recreational purposes for the benefit of Wythall (and neighbourhood) residents. Our Association acts as an ‘umbrella’ organisation to some 45 Constituent organisations who use our services. Sports and recreational facilities include three pitches for football, one each for Gaelic football, cricket and archery, a bowling green and four tennis courts, children’s playgrounds and dog training areas. Volunteers of the Association manage the site together with some paid staff, who organise the use of facilities for recreational and sporting activities, function rooms and meeting rooms and maintenance etc. The volunteers also organise fund-raising events on the park and run a registered Members’ Club (for about 1,500 members), which provides social facilities and generates income to help service the remainder of the Park functions. We are told and believe we are a unique organisation which is a compliment until we find out that because of this we do not fall into anyone’s category when asking for help with funding. Overheads in 2009 were £242k.
