The Jibon Tari (Boat of Life) is a fully equipped hospital on a boat which takes medical care and surgery to restore sight, movement or hearing to the very poorest people in remote communities of rural Bangladesh. Travelling by river is the best way to reach people in a country where one third of the landmass is underwater.

    Situation

The Jibon Tari travels down the waterways to moor at to each remote village for approximately 12 weeks at a time during which the most impoverished local people are examined and provided with medical treatment. This includes surgery in the operating theatre on board to restore their sight, hearing or mobility or repair cleft lip. Additionally, health education empowers people with knowledge to prevent disabling conditions themselves and training is provided for local doctors, midwives and health workers to leave vital skills behind when the boat moves on. Auxillary services such as physiotherapy get people back on their feet again. Many of the people who benefit have never seen a doctor before and would have little hope of getting the medical treatment they urgently needed otherwise.
