    Situation

Raw Material has been able to accept an invitation to South Africa where we will deliver workshops in documentary film making and editing in the townships. The opportunity will enable us to send young film makers, supported by the charities professional development scheme and director Tim Brown, to attend the Kwamashu Film Festival, K*****ulu Natal, Durban from December 10-16, to offer an education in film for young people and to inspire new talents. KCAP, the Kwamashu community advancement project, based in Durban, South Africa, was set up by Edmund Mhlongo, a visionary member of Nelson Mandela's National Peace Committee initiative, to combat deprivation, youth crime and lack of opportunity in the South African townships. Raw Material was first invited to visit South Africa to help KCAP build their skills and to develop a new centre for young people from street gangs, to engage them in music, performance, theatre, film and arts education. Raw Material spent several weeks in the township, providing music technology courses, film making classes and in producing original music and films and hosted KCAP for two UK visits and a national tour. Five years later KCAP have firmly established their new Ekaya centre in the heart of the township, offering local youth real advancement away from crime and violence. We shall be working with the Kwamashu community groups and also with the Gauteng department for Sports Arts and Culture for 2008-9, where we have been invited to work with the Mndeni community development project in Soweto. Raw Material continues to actively fundraise to assist in these initiatives, building international dialogue and practices across the African Diaspora, with links in Ghana, the Gambia and Senegal.
