    Situation

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES  To provide an innovative music project for adults with learning difficulties to have access to this type of technology, previously unavailable to them thus giving them the chance to express their feelings through music.  To provide an electronic music environment that encourages expression, creativity, self worth and confidence. This will reinforce basic skills training, I.T skills, basic music theory, timing and the fundamentals of sound and hearing and how we perceive them.  To create a music learning revolution, widening the participation of the students and enabling them to create their own work on a compact disc master copy for them to keep and listen to at home. Also the creation of a digital portfolio with samples of work and sounds.  This type of technology has only previously been available to professionals for example, up & coming pop stars and top record producers. But with the advent of music technology over the past few years and the availability of cheaper equipment, this gives adults with learning difficulties the chance to grasp this type of technology.  Students need no singing or musical talent, as the software can manipulate their voices and musical ability to produce viable outcomes. TARGET AUDIENCE Gamelea Countryside Training Trust provides training to people with learning disabilities or with multiple disabilities, and young disaffected and disadvantaged adults, a group which the Disability Rights Commission reports are most likely to be unemployed. They are also a group least likely to be involved with music technology and I.T. This project believes that digital sound recording and all aspects of I.T and multimedia could provide a vital step towards empowering people with learning difficulties, allowing them more control and choice over their lives and promoting inclusion in a very real way, in line with Government aspirations. OUTCOMES This project will use technology in a way that will show adults with learning difficulties an exciting and new way of recording music, audio and dialogue. It will also promote the learning of basic skills in particular emotion (confidence, self-esteem, creativity), social interaction (sharing, co-operation) and communication/language (interaction, information and instruction). Students could create their own songs for use in raising the charities profile and for future fund raising events. Other establishments may also want to use the studio for students around the country to enable them to participate in musical technology. The project will enable/tap-in-to students’ creative skills. Skills they may not previously thought they had. Giving them the chance to use technologies/software previously not available generally, due to cost, to the general public. This project will offer the basics of writing music, the basics of musical timing and the basics of musical technology such as: • Learning MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) • Computer Aided Audio Sequencing • Virtual Instruments • Music Theory • Sound Mixing • Recording Audio • Effects units & Audio Processors • Sampling of Audio Editing • Copyrighting of Music • Drum Programming Within the course all students will produce a digital portfolio of their work along with a CD of their musical work.
