Prevention and treatment of mental health problems in persons with Down syndrome (DS) remains an under-resourced area of healthcare provision in the UK. Services for children and adults with DS continues to be the focus of ongoing research and service development, very little interest has been given to younger adults with Down Syndrome (18 –35 years age group). This project will address this fundamental need.

    Situation

As young people, move into adulthood they face a period of great upheaval and emotional challenges. These challenges are further enhanced for those young people with DS as they search for the answer for the immortal question ‘who am I and where do I fit in?’ We understand that some young people with DS may be at risk of developing mental health problems at this time; however, we are concerned that we have gaps in our research related to supporting people with DS during this critical time in their lives. 150 adults will be randomly selected and recruited to participate in the research project. The 2 year research study will focus on 200 people with DS aged 18-35 and will be conducted by two highly respected researchers, The key objectives of the research will be to review the nature of the mental heath problems faced by young adults, assessing the characteristics associated with the mental health problems and providing a review of known solutions to the problems faced.
