Working with around 2000 young people, the volunteers on the Ambassadors Academy encourage the youngsters to lead a healthy life and make positive lifestyle choices. Working in deprived areas, the Academy interns offer many different programmes through the culturally-relevant sport of football, working with schools, youth groups, community organisations and churches.

    Situation

The Ambassadors Academy is Ambassadors in Sports’ 10 month training programme during which the volunteers put their football coaching and classroom learning into practise. During the Academy, interns receive 3 weeks’ intensive sports ministry training (including FA coaching badges) as well as additional tutoring and mentoring, one-to-ones and learning in project teams. Interns are placed in project areas (currently in South Manchester, Bolton and London) where they provide quality coaching in schools and extra-curricular sessions, coach on Ambassadors Soccer Schools around the country and get the opportunity to also coach children around the globe on International Coaching and playing tours. Interns also assist with the running of youth groups, tournaments, Summer festivals and other football programmes. They are mentored and assessed by an experienced team leader, in addition to the Ambassadors in Sport Academy staff. Young people that meet the Academy interns are encouraged by a positive role model; someone who is concerned that they should enjoy safe, fair and healthy activities both inside and outside of school/work and encourages them to achieve their potential and learn life skills and character improvement through a sport they love. Currently we work with 7 youth groups, 13 schools, 1 referal unit, 1 YOT crime diversion and 11 churches. However, we would like to see at least a 20% increase in the numbers we are working with in the 2008/09 school year. The total expenditure of £43,150 is offset by £18,750 income (donations and intern’s course fees), and therefore we need £24,400 to run the project for the 2008/09 year. The figure for expenditure is based on having 10 interns and includes the costs for 5 extra interns to join throughout the year for 3 months (salary costs of project coordinators £21,500, accommodation £12,300, equipment & kit £2500, training £3000, recruitment, travel, admin and other expenses £3850).
