Action Acton has converted an old Doughnut factory into 4500 sq. ft. of workspace for individuals (including those from disadvantaged communities and backgrounds) wanting to start up creative and media businesses. The objective is to promote innovation and entrepreneurship by developing an exciting creative and media cluster from which individuals can eventually move on to expand their business and support local community and economic development.

    Situation

As part of its core charitable objective of 'promoting economic and community regeneration' Action Acton is developing the Doughnut Factory to provide opportunities for individuals to start up creative and media businesses. This includes individuals from black and ethnic minority communities, women, young people and individuals with disabilities. The London Development Agency and Government Office for London (European Regional Development Fund) have contributed capital funding, along with Action Acton, to renovate the premises. The funding now requested would enable the project to be developed in very innovative ways, trying out models of managed workspace/businesss incubation support which could be replicated elsewhere. The project will support 50 individuals at a time who will be encouraged to move on as their business expands thereby providing further opportunities for other individuals to get support. The aim is also to eventually generate a surplus from renting desk spaces. Any surplus would then be ploughed back into the charity to contribute towards it becoming financially sustainable. This is an ideal opportunity to support an innovative project which will deliver measurable social and community benefit in a disadvantaged area.
