Each week 60 people with multiple sclerosis receive oxygen treatment in the hyperbaric chamber at the Chilterns MS Centre. The chamber is operated by 22 trained volunteers. We need to raise £5,000 to cover the annual running costs of the chamber.

    Situation

Due to the sale of the land on which our current building stands, the Chilterns MS Centre, registered charity number 800853, has been forced to raise funds for a new building and associated equipment. The charity, established in 1985, required £200,000 a year in 2006 to fund its work and now needs over £500,000 this year to fund the treatments and services delivered. In addition, we still need to raise £900,000 to complete our £2.5m appeal for the funding and equipping of our new building which will provide 1,300 square metres of space compared to our current 250 square metres. Under normal circumstances a small charity would not choose to be in this financial situation with resources stretched to the limit, but the only other option would be to allow our building to be bulldozed and end 25 years of providing treatment and support for MS patients and their families. There is no other long-term treatment provision locally for our patients, even the limited NHS critical care service which was available has had its funding withdrawn so we really are the only service available in the area for people with MS. Treatment in the chamber relieves some of the symptoms of MS such as extreme tiredness and incontinence, it also helps stroke patients and assists with wound healing for patients with mouth cancer requiring reconstructive surgery. While we raise funds for the new building we need support with our operating costs to ensure continuation of services for all our patients. £5,000 would secure the treatments we offer in the chamber for the next twelve months.
