Chilterns MS Centre - The site our Centre stands on has been sold by the landowners for redevelopment and the Centre will be demolished. Our new building due to be completed in 2011 will be 1,300 sq mtrs and have a hydrotherapy pool. Total project cost is £2.3m. The hydrotherpay pool will cost £200,000. We have 545 patients relying on us for their treatment and the help and support we provide them, their carers and families. MS is a debilitating, degenerative disease with no cure. It can cause severe disability for the worst affected. Hydrotherapy will provide an additional treatment bringing new benefits to patients.

    Situation

The Chilterns MS Centre provides over 19 drug-free symptom management therapies for people with multiple sclerosis (MS) from six counties. Each week, 260 people visit the Centre for treatment. The Centre also supports the carers, families and friends of people with MS; this means we are working with over 1,000 people each year providing the help and support they need: nowhere else in the area provides these services. The new building will enable staff to eliminate the waiting list and provide an even broader range of treatments and services for more people with MS including hydrotherapy. Exercising and treatment in heated water - hydrotherapy, provides unique support and resistance allowing physiotherapists to target specific areas of the body effectively. Hydrotherapy is well known to benefit a wide range of conditions, including MS. In the pool our aim will be to provide a mixture of group sessions for less disabled patients and one-to-one treatment for our more severely disabled patients. We anticipate in excess of 60 patients a week will receive treatment in the pool. MS is not curable, all we can hope to achieve is to relieve some pain and alleviate some symptoms, for a patient this will be a major step. The pool will cost £200,000, this includes the addition of a rising floor and RiverFlow action.
