There is a lack of evidence based information and support on how to put eating well into practice for those who are responsible for ensuring vulnerable people in the UK eat well. Those areas where there is an urgent need for input include home care workers, workers in residential care settings and workers who support people in assisted housing or through day centres and clubs.

    Situation

CWT is only charity in the UK which produces evidence based information and practical and nutritional guidelines for vulnerable people and we have been instrumental in getting Government to include better nutritional standards in schools, nurseries and residential care. There remains however a serious lack of suitable training support for those who have the day to day responsibility for providing food and drink to vulnerable people. CWT has produced reports on how to encourage and support eating well among looked after children in residential and foster care; older people and older people with dementia and among children and adults with learning disabilities. We have however been unable to secure funding to translate this evidence based guidance into practical support material. We have previously done this with work on under 5s in child care and these materials are now extensively used across the UK. As a completely independent charity with no links to the food industry we are in a unique position to ensure that the information provided on eating well is impartial, scientifically accurate and sensible and we have over the past 20 years established a reputation for high quality resources and recommendations which make a difference.
