The Foundation for Paediatric Osteopathy sends a team of paediatric osteopaths to the neonatal intensive care unit at Barnet General Hospital for one day per week, where they treat very vulnerable premature babies. From January 2008 this safe and efficient service will extend to support the neonatal unit at North Middlesex Hospital (run by Great Ormond Street Hospital) one day per week.

    Situation

For over ten years, a team of our paediatric osteopaths has had a presence in the Starlight Unit at Barnet General Hospital. There, we treat infants who are in very poor health; some of the babies on the ward are born as early as 23 weeks gestation. The difference that we continue to makes to the babies' health and comfort has been noted by the Ward's nurses and doctors - in fact, it is they who refer patients to us! As well as our work with life-threatened babies, we recently began providing treatments to children the Acute Paediatrics Ward; we are pleased to report that we are receiving and ever increasing number of referrals for this service as well. It is our intention to increase the amount of time we are able to spend at Barnet General Hospital (currently one day each week) and, from 2008 onwards, to expand our outreach programme to work with other hospitals, such as North Middlesex Hospital noted above, and other children's centres. We need your support to continue and expand this service as it, like the rest of our services, relies entirely on donations.
